Ronald Poon-Affat: TTFF Hero

Ronald Poon-AffatRonald Poon-Affat has been a passionate advocate of Trees That Feed Foundation from inception.

Mr. Poon-Affat met TTFF co-founder Mike McLaughlin in 2010 when he was elected to the Society of Actuaries’ Board of Directors, which Mike was leading.

Their first connection was as Caribbean actuaries. Ronald is from Trinidad & Tobago, while Mike is from Jamaica. Their second connection was a shared interest in making a meaningful impact in an eco-friendly way. Ronald was immediately interested in the work of TTFF.

An engaged supporter for over a decade, Ronald recently said, “Mike and Mary have led the way, tirelessly dedicating themselves to planting 400,000 breadfruit trees through Trees That Feed Foundation. Their work not only contributes to global food security and environmental sustainability but also empowers communities to thrive independently.”

Ronald believes so wholeheartedly in the mission that he nominated Mike for two awards over the years. In 2021, Mike received the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFOA’s) Phiatus Award, a recognition for actuaries who have made notable charitable contributions.

In 2024, Mike was honored once more thanks to Ronald’s nomination. This time it was the Society of Actuaries’ 2024 inaugural Spotlight Societal Purpose Award, which honors individuals and organizations championing community involvement.

The more TTFF supporters spread the message of our mission, the more food bearing trees TTFF can plant. That means more families and communities can receive sustainable gifts of food security, economic empowerment, and a healthier environment.

“I’m honored to have played a small role in nominating this remarkable charity for these awards, helping to shine a light on their invaluable efforts to make a lasting, positive impact on the planet,” said Ronald.

Thank you, Mr. Poon-Affat, for your long-lasting support and advocacy.
