A Huge Step Toward Sustainability in Uganda

Ugandans are taking a step toward sustainability in Uganda by propagating breadfruit trees

His Grace Demo Farm, run by Grace Mubiru Bekalaze, has made a huge step with breadfruit toward permanent sustainability in Uganda!

One of the biggest challenges with breadfruit is propagation because breadfruit doesn’t grow from seeds.

Miriam Gracie Lubwama, farm co-manager, used a method of propagation called air-layering. Trees That Feed Foundation co-founder Mike McLaughlin demonstrates the process in this video.

Other TTFF partners in Uganda like Kafene Nursery are experimenting with air-layering breadfruit trees too. Soon there will be no need for importation, which is costly and does not lead to true sustainability in Uganda.

When we congratulated Grace Mubiru and his team, he thanked us and said, “This is just a beginning, we will try our level best to see that bread fruit tree is not shipped from USA again. Kathy Shaw Johnson: thanks for introducing our farm to the Trees That Feed organization.”

Kathy Johnson, a longtime TTFF volunteer, has couriered thousands of breadfruit trees into Uganda via international flights. She is an avid proponent of breadfruit in Uganda and puts her time, money, and efforts where her mouth is.

She said, “I am so very proud of Miriam Gracie Lubwama, and everyone working so hard to make Breadfruit Trees plentiful, available and successful in Uganda.”

Trees That Feed Foundation couldn’t provide food, jobs, and sustainability through food bearing trees without dedicated partners on the ground. Thank you to Kamya Musigire, TTFF Uganda representative, for his leadership of this coalition.

We couldn’t support these partners’ work without individual donors and organizations like National Tropical Botanical Garden, Mutiny Island Vodka, NRP Applebee’s, and others. Thank you!
